The global spotlight has not shone on Shenyang for more than 400 years, when invaders briefly attempted to make this city the capital of China. However, Dinny Mcmahon notes in his Wall Street Journal article that city officials are planning to put the city back on the map with impressive architecture and design.
This city, which is located in the northeast part of China, will soon boast a new 111-floor office building named Pearl of the North. Once completed, the structure will usurp the title of world’s tallest building, which currently belongs to One World Trade Center in New York. The structure, seen below, will glow gold at night and is symbolic of a pearl. The illumination at night is supposed to represent molten steel in reference to the history of the city’s historical industrial prowess. During the hours of the day, the structure is supposed to evoke the image of a traditional Chinese string instrument, the guzhen. The entrances that sit on the ground level flare out, symbolizing the nomadic tents that were once commonplace in the region. However, the city’s residents are not the biggest fan of the structure’s design and symbolism.
Residents believe that the building simply appears similar tall buildings in major cities and that the construction was a complete waste of money. The Baoneng Real Estate Development, which features the building on the company website, believes that Pearl of the North demonstrates the city’s march towards establishing itself as a major international city.
According to Mcmahon, the demand for such structures may be nonexistent as the city’s vacancy rate sits at an alarmingly high rate currently. However, some residents do believe that Shenyang is in need of more high buildings. In the last decade or so, several unique buildings have been completed in the city including one that was designed to look like an ancient Chinese coin. Shenyang is just one of the many Chinese cities that have such spectacular constructions in progress. Of the world’s 20 tallest buildings, 12 of them will be in Chinese cities like Shenyang by 2020. The Pearl of the North is just one of three towers of fantastic height that are scheduled to be built in the coming years. Only time will tell how this structure and other buildings in Shenyang will be received by the chilly city, and the world.
