Best Bridges of 2014

December 29, 2014 by Kurt Kucera

For thousands of years, bridges have been designed and constructed as a means to connect people for commerce and travel purposes. Aesthetics have not necessarily been the most central focus of these practical structures. However, the year of 2014 yielded some spectacular bridges. Here are a few of the best.

1. Schaufelschlucht Bridge

Architecture firm Marte Marte designed this bridge which sits in the mountains of Austrian Alps. The bridge which is more than 15 meters long appears as a single block of concrete, and matches the surrounding mountain rocks.

2. Jetty to Mont Saint

This amazing structure, which sits on the french coastline, was opened to pedestrians in early 2014.  Dietmar Feichtinger designed this bridge to replace  a previous structure that was problematic as it blocked water flow. While crossing the bridge, pedestrians are able exposed to stunning views of impressive medieval structures of the nearby village.

3. 11 Street Bridge Park

After a lengthy wait for the results of a nationwide competition, these plans from OMA + OLIN were announced as the winner. This elevated park which will sits over the Anacostia River  in Washington D.C. will utilize a previous existing freeway bridge. This space will be converted into an impressive and vibrant place for the citizens of the nation’s capital to explore and spend leisure time. This structure is planned to incorporate performance spaces, urban agriculture, play areas and kayak launches  into the finished product.

4. Bridge at Buen

This bridge, designed by the firm 3XN, will serve, once completed, as a symbol for Norway’s southernmost city, Mandal. This structure, which will be for pedestrians and cyclists, will connect the blossoming cultural district of the city. The light design which utilizes wood is a great compliment to the region’s architectural style.

5. Peace Footbridge

This structure, spanning almost 500 feet across the Rhone river in Lyon was designed by the firm Dietmar Feichtinger. This asymmetric design is eye-catching and will help both pedestrians and cyclists travel across this french city.
